I am redoing an early 40's A and was wondering if the gears need to be replaced. It had a long productive life in the field, but has not run for about 15 years. I believe the oil pressure is fairly low on these. Didn't know if they are "automatic" replacement items or worth taking a chance on. Some oil pumps are pretty pricey I know.

Has anyone ever heard of "powder coating" or "chroming" the gears to reduce clearance?

Thanks for any ideas. Jed

Jed my 40 A sat out doors for 15 years and when I tore it down the oil pump was full of ice. I cleaned it up put it backed togeather and it is working fine. The pressure can be adjusted in the back part of the crank case it has a lock nut on the adjusting screw. GOOD LUCK BottomD.

Those gears themselves will show very little wear and I seldom have heard of any needing changed unless they got something in them that broke a tooth or something. Don't know about an early 40's A but my 1948 A has a pressure regulator to set up for oil pressure. Aslo, when I got the tractor the oil intake screen was full of sludge and crud and I could not get good pressure till I cleaned it.

I think before you loose clearance at the gear, you will loose it at the bushing at the shaft top of pump. Check this for clearance.
