We have a 3020 that all hyd stopped working, no power steering, no lift, no brake assist, no remotes, nothing. Pulled the filter and screen but did not see any metal. If the coupler between the engine and pump fails will the steering still work off the charge pump in the transmittion or does everything stop? What are the chances the charge pump or pump drive have failed? What is the easiest way in there?

Thanks
John

Hey just to clear up the question about what pump controls the power steering. It is the pump in the transmission. On our 69 model 4020 if the clutch is left in for long priods of time the power steering, and brakes are lost. It must be placed in park, and the clutch enguaged and they will returm momentarily.

Steve is absolutely correct. The steering oil is provided by the main pump, and the main pump is charged by the transmission pump. If it's a synchro-range tractor and the clutch is left down long enough for the main pump to use up it's charge oil, it will quit functioning correctly. Releasing the clutch pedal allows the trans pump to supply charge oil and the main pump will funtion again.

G-Man,

I may have been right -- but you said it a whole lot better.

bill,

If the transmission pump doesn't feed the front pump some fluid - there's not much the front pump can do. The transmission pump lives in the fluid reservoir, so one of his jobs is to supply the front pump with fluid. No fluid, no steering.

Steve

After you check the trans pump and drive coupling as previously suggested, you may want to look at the screen in the stroke valve housing on the pump. I have seen it come apart and jam the crankcase outlet valve which will keep the pump de-stroked (not pumping) I agree you should get a manual! E-mail if I can help further.

as stated below, first check the main pump drive coupling.pull the filter cap off and put a bucket under the tractor and start the tractor,if fluid comes out of the filter housing at about 4 gals a minute, the trans pump is ok.if you have to go into the trans pump,be sure to check the piping for holes

John, check the easy thing first, drive coup. on main pump. There have been many of them worn out.It is not the priority valve or you would still have steering and brakes as thats its function.Stroke control valve in main pump could be problem as I have seen this happen.Jim B

I believe that power steering is powered by the main pump, not the charging tranny pump. It is prioritized tho by the priority valve so when a hyd function fails you should have steering at least. My guess is that your priority valve is stuck out of position (external fix) or as you say the tranny pump may be shot) Another possibility is an unhooked or broken line inside. I`d try to obtain a tech manual to assist in diagnosis before splitting. Anyone else have something more to offer?
