I have a new JD Lawn Tractor GX 335 with a 20 HP Kaw engine. I would like to disconnect the switch that stops the mower when the reverse petal is depressed without holding up on the PTO switch on the dash. I pulled the wire off of the switch that is activated by pressing the reverse petal but the mower pulley on the motor will not turn. I put the wire back on the switch and the mower pulley will work again. Can someone tell me how to correct the situation. I want to mow in reverse without pulling up on the dash PTO switch. Thanks Wayne

Now let me see, we have to think of another way to protect the user, now that we have that reverse issue cleared up with the legal begals. We could do the combines and real tractors that way. I am sure it would make all the contractors happy if we rigged the commericial lawn mowers that way. I got it. Sometimes when the sun is setting, I have to hold my hand up to shield my eyes when I am going directly in the sun. Now we could rig a sun sensor on the front of the mowers that would shut the engine down when the sun reached a certain angle and the mower was turned into the suns. Of course it should not be too much of a convenience for the hill country people to mow when the usn isn't shining. Just trying to make a little humor - that was the first thing I had to "fix" when I bought a late model mower.

i bought a new john deere 425 twin steer with the twenty horsepower kawasaki engine last year. mine has hydrostatic drive-i assume yours does also-when you prerss the reverse pedal on mine you only have to hold the pto switch up until you start moving in reverse. i wouldn't recommend unhooking it,especially if you have younger children around or a younger or inexperienced operator-it may save someones foot or even their life! i hope you enjoy your's as much as i do mine.

Wayne, Ive never been near one of those mowers, but from what you say, it sounds like that reverse switch youre talking about may be a NORMALLY CLOSED SPST switch, which means its closed to engage the blade EXCEPT it opens to disconnect the blade circuit (electric clutch I suppose??) when you depress reverse. Therefore, removing it is the same as it always being open and the blade NEVER can engage. Is that the scenario youre describing????? ???? If so (its actually normally closed), removing it is not the key, it's instead (assuming it is a normally closed switch which opens by depressing reverse) to connect permanently (shorting together) the two wires that go to it, so the circuit is always closed to power the blade circuit, regardless if in forward or reverse. HOWEVER, I do not recommend this or condone it as an attempt to over ride any safety features, Im just sayign from your description, it sounds like a normally closed switch which could be defeated by connecting the two wires which lead to it. Sorry lol the Attorney in me had to state that disclaimer. Ol John T in Indiana

John T,

Most of us understand the lawyers who work to protect JD and other makers get those infernal gadgets like that switch designed in to protect their clients from the ravages of "trial lawyers" and overwrought juries.

Seems to me there will be a special place -- somewhere around Dante's 7th circle where the 1-800-HEHURTME! lawyers will, like Sisyphus the highwayman, be forced to drive a tractor up a hill only to have it die near the top and coast back down because the seat switch killed the engine.

Steve, I sure hear you and couldnt agree more lol. I didnt become a lawyer until over 45 following early retirement as an Electrical Engineer, and I'm sort of a Maverick Country Lawyer type. Theres no doubt many safety controls are the result either of OSHA and JD Corporate Lawyers trying to avoid costly lawsuits from Plaintiff's Attorneys. Good to hear from you, your neighbor to the South, Ol John T

A friend of mine bought a new John Deere lawn mower this year. He told me about how he slid the switch down, so it's away from whatever make the switch work.

I bought his old lawn mower a LX178. The first time his wife cut the grass she said she wanted her old mower back. She didn't like that switch. He called the John Deere dealer and they told him how to fix it so it keeps running.

For Steven M., would you drop me an e-mail about this situation, I also would like to dis-arm my GX 325, maybe you could call your friend who found out how to do it and let me know.
Thanks
TeeJay

It sounds like his fix was to remove the switch from its intended physical location, so that depressing reverse didnt push the switch button down to open it as described above. i.e. what you say reinforces my belief its a NORMALLY CLOSED SPST switch. Ol John T
