My clutch pulley was loose on my 49 "A" (you could move it up and down). I took it apart and found what I thought was the problem. The bearing was dry and worn. #1, I have measure the crank where the bearing rides. It measures 2.182". I can not seem to find any reference to what it should be in the I.T. manual. Is this with in the tolerance for a new bearing? #2, The pulley bushing measures 2.266"ish (my caliber's are not quite big enough) and the crank measures 2.245". Given these measurements is this too much play? #3, The driving disk (#A2448R) was cracked on the back side only. I know this is not right, but I do not see what it will hurt if left alone. Do I replace it, weld it, or leave it like it is? The clutch worked fine before I took it apart. #4, The pulley brake was not centered on the pulley. I was sure when I took it apart that the fork spring would be missing. It was still there. It looks like the fork shaft sets too low in the fork bearing. If I pull the shaft up it centers itself like it is suppose to be. Do I have the wrong spring or am I not seeing something? #5, Last but not least in the parts book it talks about a seal for the dust shield, but there is no part # for it. What do ya all do for this? As always THANK YOU in advance for your help BUDD

BUDD, ~(1)__are you measuring the actual crank, or the inner bearing race that is on the crank? [that is a 2 piece bearing with an inner race] sometimes the inner race will look like part of the crank.
~(2)__I don't have a book handy for the crank specs but .021" is too much clearance for that bushing. With a crank now measured at 2.245" that would probably put the crank at 2.250" when new. I try to get the crank to bushing as tight a fit as I can & still get a smooth spinning pulley. If the new bushing is pushed in with a proper mandrel the fit will be about as good as you can get between the crank & pulley bushing.
~(3)__I don't know what to tell you on that drive disk. I have seen many run for years with a crack, but as long as it is apart the only way to do it right is replace the disk.
~(4)__That is a normal occurrence on an old Deere with the pulley brake being low on the pulley. You can use shim washers to raise the brake arm. Due to clutch fork shaft to shaft bearing wear I usually bore the fork shaft hole out in the bearing & make a brass bushing with a hat shaped top lip on it, that not only tightens the fork shaft but also raises the brake arm.
~(5)__On the later A's the seal is part of the dust shield.

Clooney: When I think seal I think rubber of some kind. Is this seal that the book refers to just a metal thing that is on the dust shield? If so I have it. One more question, the bearing washer, is it suppose to be flat or does it have a bevel to it? If it has a bevel then which way does the bevel go? If it is suppose to flat then mine is bent! THANKS BUDD

Budd, there is no rubber seal just the steel lip.
~That washer is supposed to be crowned to let the oil get to the pulley drain back holes. It's hard to find any info on the direction of that washer. I always install it so the crown faces the bearing, don't know if that is correct but I feel that allows the oil to get to the drain holes.

Is this with in the tolerance for a new bearing? I looked at this again and I think this is the inner bearing race that I measured. It is hard to tell though. On the dust sheild, is this still available through Deere? When you make the bushing with the "Top Hat" for the fork shaft, how thick is the top hat? THANKS BUDD
