the 2 adjstmnt screws leading to the intake are fuel mix screws i assume. which side(magneto or flywheel is the load and which is the idle? i get it running and want to lean it out a bit. also, when going up my road there is a hill, when going up in fourth gear, she wants to stop and i lose power. giving more fuel helps but you really have to open it up, can it be the fuel mix, as the transmission is not slipping and she gets up and goes when clutch released. thanks

did like you said opened both screws from seated 2 turns let her heat up for 20 minutes and began fiddlin with it. the choke was closed the whole time. got her puff black then adjusted to clear. opened the choke hjalfway and all heck broke loose. backfire, racing, sputtering, no power when test drove to see(in second couldn't climb my mole hill), etc. i turned her off and reset to 2 turns on each screw then started up. good power puffs a little black when pto turned on to get some type of load, she drove fine.
will have dad in law change the plugs and check points to ensure clean and in correct position for timing. where is the oil reservoir and the drain plug and where is the fill tube for oil and hydraulic fluid? thanks, you guys are like a small town parts store with your answers. i live in moline michigan and farmall seemz to be the tractor of choice around here.

Don, as you found out you can't make those adjustments with the engine cold or the choke still on. That 2 turn/one turn setting has always worked pretty good for me as an initial setting. ~As for the puffing black smoke when a load is applied? That is normal as there is an enrichment circuit in the carb that adds extra fuel when a load is applied.

Don, it could be the adjusting needles (like the power needle set too lean {in too much}) or a fuel flow or low float level problem or even the ignition. Try adjusting the load needle (one in center of tractor on pulley side) by havign the tractor at full throttle and opening her up till she richens and black smokes out the stack, and then turning her back in about 1/8 turn or just until the black smoke stops blowing. Or, try that hill again but with the load needle about 1/8 turn or more out to richen her up. Open the carbs lower bowl drain cock and see if you get a good steady stream of gas out there to see if the sediment bowl assembly or lines clogged. If you have good flow out the carbs bowl and richening (opening) the load needle still doesnt help with the problem you described and the float level is sufficiently high, I would install a fresh set of Autolite 388 and try her again. Also, are the points clean and not pitted or burned and gapped properly??? First, try opening the load needle, if that dont help check and gap and clean the points, if that dont help try new Autolite 388 plugs, and if that still dont help take 2 aspirins and post back at the office and describe what happened and we will give more suggestions. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

John, the problem with adjusting the load needle without a load on the engine is even at wide open throttle the governor holds the throttle plate to about 1/4 open & at that point you are still partially on the idle system & economizer system. About the only way to get a true load setting is under a belt, PTO or work load as that will get the throttle plate opened enough to be fully on the load system. The hill method suggested is much better & more accurate than the wide open black smoke method..

Yep, Likewise, I always unhook the governor when I do that but theres NOTHING better than a true load which we usually dont have when we want to adjust the old girls lol so the old black smoke method with the governor unhooked gets us somewhere in the ball park. I hope things are fine up ur way and hopefully we can hook up someday to give a seminar together or somethign like Mark Johnson wanted us to last time at Gatherign of the Green??? I was paired with Robert Beaver last time and we told the group we only wanted carb and electrical questions so a participant says NOOOO the brochure says questions on ANY subject. We told them fine lol you can ask questions on any topic like it says (but no warranty to answers). When you gonna semi retire like me and play more with our old Johnnys?? Don, the needle closest to the tractor center [mag side] is the load screw & the needle farthest away from the tractor center [flywheel side] is the idle screw. Start with the idle needle about 2 turns out from seated & the load needle about 1 turn out from seated then adjust from there when warm & working.
~That losing power going up a hill can be carb adjustment or you could have a fuel flow problem to or through the carb [open the carb drain valve & make sure you have a pencil sized stream of fuel for AT LEAST 30 seconds] if not find out why. You could even have an ignition problem when under moderate throttle load & climbing a hill as that is where it would show up first due to high combustion pressures.
