I'm pretty much a John Deere rookie- bought a tractor at auction near the Canadian border awhile back, as a "using" tractor- thought it was a 2020, turned out to be a 710, which is a comparably sized German (Lanz) model which was exported to Canada. I was making some inquiries on the general board, and someone said they are considered to be a good tractor, with the advantage of having the Dubuque engine. Saw the Dubuque reference on another post today. Just what does the "Dubuque" designation refer to? Certain models? if so, which ones? I sure like the engine- starts instantly w/o ether, runs strong.

The term "Dubuque" refers to the John Deere Dubuque Works and ANY tractor that was made there. The "M","MT","40", "420", "430", "435" and "440" tractors are "Dubuque" tractors, as opposed to the "Waterloo" tractors which of course were built in Waterloo, Iowa.

The "1010", "2010", "1020", "1520","2020", "1530", "2030", "2630", "2440" and "2640" tractors built in Dubuque are ALSO "Dubuque" tractors. Production of AG tractors was discontinued in 1980, about halfway through the production run of the "2440" and "2640" tractors, so anything built after sometime in 1980, which is a John Deere utility tractor would NOT be a "Dubuque" tractor but would be a "Mannheim (Germany)" tractor.

All of the two cylinder engines made there were of the vertical arrangement. They also made 3,4, and 6 cylinder engines there. The engines found in the 2510 and 2520 are the same as found in the 2020 and 2030. ALso, the 6329 diesel and 6303 gas engines found in the 4030 tractor were DUBUQUE engines even though, like the 2510 and 2520, the 4030 was built in Waterloo.

Also, the 435 and 440 tractors equiped with diesel engines had Detroit Diesel, GM built 2-53 engines, but the tractors are considered to be "Dubuque".

Hi,

Man-o-man! I was all set to add my 2 cents worth, about the other machines with more than 2 cylinders, but you've covered it all! :-)

Mike, Dubuque is the (2 - cylinder) term used for the vertical engine tractors that were built there. Such as the M-MT-40-420-430 models. The other 2-cylinders (horizonal) were built at Waterloo.

Yeah,my friend has a 710.No,they don't have Dubuque engines cause the 710 is a 4cyl. diesel. It,s a good tractor but the hydraulics are kinda slow.I,m scared to buy it from him since it,s not a very common model.

If the 710 is a German made tractor, then most likely the engine was made as JD's Saran, France plant. Saran makes 300 Series engines very similar to those made in Dubuque after the two cylinders of the 430. Now Dubuque is phasing out of building engines and the North American 300 Series engines are made in Torreon, Mexico.
