Tell me about a JD H?

Hello,

I am mainly into Farmalls but would like to add a 2 cylinder JD to my collection. I really like the looks of JD H's. I might be "in the market" for one soon. Would like to hear from other H owners about what is good and bad about an H, as well as things to look for in a tractor. Have found a couple nice examples on the internet but they are too far away--I'm in eastern N.C. What I would like to find is a nice, straight, good running tractor that needs very little other than some paint and slight "cosmetics" to be restored.

Any and all opinions and advice welcomed!
Al

The first tractor I bought to farm my 12 acres was an H. It was and is still the biggest little tractor I ever ran. It'll do more work on 2 quarts of gas than any other. I used it for years on any job I could think of and it never failed me. I totally restored it in 1998, but kind of wish I hadn't. It's too pretty to take out and work anymore.Seriously, they are a good tractor to restore and show. They still have that two cylinder sound, don't weigh much, and will idle down to where you think they won't make another revolution. Very impressive when you take one hand, pull it s-l-o-w-l-y over and it fires right up. I love 'em all and I have others, but my H is special.

Your comment about the stingy use of fuel reminds me of what one of our neighbors used to say about his H (back in the '40s when he used it to cultivate and rake hay), "I have to drain fuel off a couple times a day to keep it from running over". Now, that's a stingy H, eh?

Your H really is special if it starts consistently in the manner you dscribe. My experience is that most of these little cuties are a bit contankerous when it comes to starting.

Al,
I grew up on everything but John Deere's. I always thought the JD H's were so cute, and decided to look for one. What I found is they are pretty pricey. So 2 years ago I settled for a very nice handstart B for $1000.00. I still want an H someday, but my B is also a very nice little tractor. I think I'll have to keep my B forever, even when I do find an H.

I have a 1940 H. In addition to what Jerry said the H's are pretty quiet running. I've had mine over 20 years and decided to overhaul it this winter.

Good evening Al, I have a 1941 JD "H" electric start. I like it because it is easy to haul to parades. It takes up little space and is east to store. You also get the popping sound with out having to have to big tractor. I use it here on our little place to pull a two wheeled trailer hauling rocks and brush and occasionaly grandson. I recently had to have it overhauled. The only advice that I can give you if you want a nice one is to save your pennies and by one that has already been overhauled and restored. Have a nice evening . Jerry
