Can the application of a mag be changed just by exchanging the cap, ie:from a 2 to a 4 cyl. Or do other factors have to be considered. Thanks

Dan, as Clooney stated just below, its not that easy. All the cap does is align external high voltage plug wire terminal leads to the internal rotating rotor tip, which is in line with those leads at the same time the points fire the coil. Changing or even removing the cap does NOTHING to change when the points fire the coil or to where the rotor tip points at that time. The cap has to have terminals that line up with where the rotor tip is at the time the plugs supposed to fire, so changing it basically changes nothing regarding when the points fire and to where the rotor tip points when that happens. So, if a 4 cylinder cap happens to have 2 of its tips that are in line with the rotor and it fires the coil at that same time AND such is the time the engines cylinders are at TDC on their compression stroke, sure its possible for that cap to work. Bottom line suggestion, get the right mag if possible. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana PS theres no such thing as a dumb question on this board, only possibly dumb answers in my opinion, and Im glad there are such good people who are willing to help out people like myself and others who need help time to time.

Dan, a 4 cylinder mag can be used on a 2-cylinder engine but it isn't as easy as it sounds. ~The point cam will have to be modified if it opens the points when there is no wire or load at that point or coil damage can result. Just changing the cap won't work, the coil must have a load present when the points open.
~You can use a 4 cyl mag by leaving the 4 cyl cap on it & shorting the 2 unused towers to a ground or other load.
