Bought an 80 sometime ago. Finally hooked up the PTO clutch lever and discovered the PTO was alread latched in. PTO doesnt turn. Clutch feels normal. Anyone have any idea why the PTO doesnt seemed to be connected to the motor anymore? Right angle drive broke and crank or could I be lucky enough to have a problem in the back?

Thanks

As far as I can tell the 80 had no diconnect for the PTO. The clutch is tight as it snaps in like it should. Therefore I feel the clutch may be ok. The PTO shaft does not turn. With the clutch in you can turn the shaft with a wrench but it doesnt turn the motor. If you pop the clutch out, you can still force the PTO to turn but can tell the brake is on. All this leads me to believe the problem is in the right angle drive or the coupler between the right angle and the shaft driving the clutch.

Anyone know if these PTO's had a history of shearing a key if they were hooked to something with little give and hit something? I think this tractor may have been a state tractor pulling a mower at one time. They probably broke the PTO and just bought another tractor.

The 80 has a live PTO, and never had non live (transmission driven, etc). Either live PTO or no PTO. I don't think you can "turn it off" at the bevel gears, or any other place. I don't see anything on mine like that. The only separate shut off is for the hydraulic pump (not driven by PTO)

Anyway...I'm no expert, but I'll see if I can find something that would help. Just to clear some things- you say that the lever can go back and forward, but the PTO does nothing?

Possibly the clutch plates are totally fried? My 80 turns the PTO, but put a load on it, and the PTO barely turns. Yours could be adjusted WAY too loose.

Of course I'm thinking optimistic. That would be a relatively easy fix than anything else. $$$ I don't know. I've been afraid to check prices for a PTO clutch!

Good luck,
Brandon

John, Im not familiar with the 80's, but other models (in addition to the live PTO, if they have it, regular engaging lever) also have that other mechanical left/right engage/disengage lever up on top which engages the bevel gears to drive the pto and pump. I had a non live PTO B once though that didnt turn, and that was because it had sheared the woodruff key down in the right angle bevel gears. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff
