I had the opportunity to drive my first JD recently and got hooked. I am now in the market for an a smaller model so my wife may enjoy it as well. As fate would have it I found a 41 JD 'H' and took it for a test drive. I was suprised to hear the racket the rear end made. I sounded very similar to a Fordson with it's worm and square cut gears. I asked around and been advised that this is normal all the way up to A s in that vintage. Yet others say some rear ends don't make any noise. Who is correct? What sould I be looking for before I but the H. Thanks for your help N Guy.

N Guy, I've found most Hs have govenor noise and a little pulley noise. As Phil stated this may be because everything pulls off the cam. As far as gears, mine have no noise. I've been around many Hs and I would'nt say thay all have gear noise. There may be some bad gears and/or bearings in the one you drove. Did by chance the seller say "they all sound like that"? My $.02, HMan

I wouldn't say that rear end noise is normal in the 2-cylinder tractors, I don't notice it in my tractors. It's possible that you are hearing cam gear noise - the JD H is unique in that it takes its drive power from the cam rather than the crankshaft. So the cam gears & bearings are huge for an engine of that size & some noise is normal. You would hear the cam noises anytime the engine is running.
