John/
Apparently you missed my first post. Could you please tell me how to set the rotor timing gap and time the pinion gears in my Wico AP mag? I took it apart last spring with the intention or replacing the bearings and am having problems getting it back together// Thank you// John R.

JOHN, I have tried to E-mail you but it won't go through. I can Fax you copy of service manual if that would help.Point gap is .015 edge gap on magnetic rotor is .090---.100 .points should just break with that edge gap. I usually use .093 -.095 to get best spark. Earl Seamands In Illinois

PS Im not sure which one, but one of those Wico's is a battery powered distributor ignition and not a magneto, in which cace you dont get the spring and snap over/trip etc., its just like a distributor??? Ol John T

Hi John, sorry, but Im not well versed on the Wico AP. I have worked on the C and X, but no AP's. Bottom lines regardless as you probably already know, are for it to fire the left number one cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke. When left is at TDC on power stroke, the governors female drive cog slot is flat horizontal, and its at that point the mag just snaps over to fire the top terminal. Im just not knowledgeable on timing what you call pinion gears, but hopefully we can both learn here from other posters. Clooney may be familiar with the AP, but if not, it may be a Robert Beaver or Mr. Thinker question, because Im just not smart enough to answer it. Ol John T in Indiana

John R. I usually don't comment where I'm not invited but since John T. kind of opened the door for me, here goes....
~John, first make sure the pinion gear is on the rotor shaft with the timing mark facing out [if not you will have dickens of a time timing it], then line the pinion mark with the CCW mark on the cam gear, [easy as that].
~Then set the point gap to .015" before attempting to set the rotor gap. I use a 3/32" tig welding wire to set the gap, but anything about that size will work. Use the wire between the trailing edge of the field laminations & rotor laminations & when the wire is just touching both [with the rotor turned lightly in the running direction] the points should just be starting to open. If it isn't correct loosen the breaker plate & rotate until it is correct.
~Be careful when working on that mag as parts are hard to find quite costly when you do find them..
