My neighbor has a 50 A. He started restoring it 2 years ago. He has had some bad health problems but now is ready to get his A running agian. He does not remember how a lot of the wiring went on it. I have worked on lot's of red tractors but am lost on the 2 cyl. ones. Here are my questions. #1 On the coil is it the pos or neg lead that goes to the dist? #2 Should the batt be hooked up pos ground? It is 12 volt with a 12 volt gen. #3 I need some instruction on timeing this motor, I have not worked with a 2 cyl and don't want to screw it up. Tractor ran well when he started on it but he has had the dist out and messing with it and when I tried to crank it over you can tell it is bad out of time. Thanks in advance for any help. I will post a photo when we get it together, it's a sharp old tractor.

Paul, unless its been changed over, it came from the factory as positive ground, meaning the positive battery terminal was connected to the tractors frame (ground). If so, the + lead on the coil is the one that goes to the distributor and gets to ground (i.e. positive) via the points. It is rough static timed such that when the left number one cylinder is at TDC on its compression stroke, thats when the points are open (first leading high lobe) on high cam, and the rotor tip is pointed to the first number one plug terminal. Then to fine tune the timing, the distributor is turned CCW to advance and CW to retard. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana
