What extra tools am I going to need to set up a ring and pinion in my 435?? I have the jd manual, they list some of the special tools.. anybody used anything elso to set the "pinion cone"?
I looks like anything but fun.

also on a different note, did the 435's have a tach or just an hour meter?

Thanks

Arnie, I haven't ever set the ring & pinion gear on a 435 but have done many M - 430's. I don't have the special pinion depth setting tool. I use yellow lead gear setting compound to read the pinion contact on the ring gear. I don't think gear setting lead is available anymore due to regulations, but prussion(sp) blue will probably work [I like the heavier lead compound better though as it gives a better contact imprint]. If you have set ring & pinion contact patterns on an auto or truck ring & pinion you won't have any problems, but if you haven't done any other ring & pinion set-ups the 435 probably isn't a good first lesson. If you haven't done any R & P set-ups you might find someone in your area that has, to take a look at the pinion imprint to steer you in the correct direction for pinion movement [spacing] to get the contact pattern you need. That isn't the fastest way to set a ring & pinion & will probably involve a few tries to get the pinion spacing correct. If you can find an old auto or truck repair manual they usually had a pinion contact chart with directions for pinion direction to correct the contact to the center of the ring gear teeth. The pinion depth along with the ring gear back lash controls the pinion to ring gear contact position.
