I went to a consignment auction yesturday. There was a 1937 JDA there the auctioneer called it an "antique" He said it was a one owner, guy had purchased it new and now owned by son. The sad part was the way it had been cobbled up. The front pedestal must have broken at some time. The singel front wheel was jd but between that and the upper part was something else. Additionally the frame was cut ahead of the engine but behind the radiator. It was lengthened out. Steering shaft was supported in a bearing that rested on a bracket on the top of the pedestan and a sprocket on the shaft was hooked to a sprocket on the outer end of the steering shaft where it went into the steering box with a chain. The engine sounded good but with this sort of shade tree mechanic work on the outer part one would wonder. Also had a lie hydraulic pump from a JD60, and a power trol box and 3 point. ONe lift arm was from an 800 hitch the other from? Rear tires looked like they might have come from an orchard tractor or something, flat spokes with wide tires. I hate to see these old tractors so cobbled that they can't be put back the way they were.

I know how you feel but look at the previous owner's point of view. Maybe during the 50' or 60's he needed a tractor with a 3 point hitch, remote cylinder and a longer wheelbase and couldn't afford to trade, but he had this old tractor which at the time nobody would give him anything for--so he used a little yankee ingenuity and made do with what he had. And he must not have been too bad a mechanic for the engine to be running well on a 65 year old tractor.

I will have to admit that sounds like the most cobbled up A I Have ever heard of. if you have ever owned an L series tractor, they had to be the most chopped up tractor Deere ever made. I have had them with two Trans. 350 chevrolet engine, Opal Car engine and trans. chrysler slant six, had one that had a V4 wisconsin on it, the way they used the clutch is took a sledge hammer and beat the original engine block off to the bellhousing and welded the wisconsin crank to what was left of the original. I have an LI back it the junk pile that is 4 1/2' long with 8" front tires and 15"rears. had another LI that the wanted wheel weights on the back, so they flipped the tractor on its side and filled the rear wheels full of concrete, right over the lugnuts and all. I cry every time I see any old Deere chopped up, but if if never happened, the ones we have today wouldn't be worth a thing, and ones like those can be parted out to help save dozens of other tractors.

Folks can cob them up, alright. I bought an unstyled L a few years ago that a guy from Long Island had cut in half, so he could get it in his pickup tk and bring it north. Some guy came here from Wis. and even before I had a chance to tell him, he knew the L was almost a half inch short. Now, that's knowing your jd's.
