I have yet to hear mine run yet, but the gas i put in leaks down the side of the bowl, comes from the under sdie of the intake/exhaust manifold, that is with the idle/load screws open 1 1/2 turn from seated. Also, when i did fill with gas and pushed the starter, had three or four pops from exhaust manifold and had smoke coming from the manifold as well. I either cracked the exhaust manifold (or it was cracked or rusted thru) or ..... am in need of help. Get shoulder surgery on monday and won't be able to work on it till mid december. sorry so long

Don, you have to address the fuel leak first. You either have a bad float, leaking needle/seat, a plugged bowl vent or porosity in the carb casting.
~Probably the place to start is to pull the float bowl off the carb & rig a liquid supply to it & see if you can see where it leaks or if the float isn't floating. If the bowl holds fluid & doesn't overflow then look for a plugged bowl vent.
~It also sounds like you have a slight gasket leak at the manifold to head. That might not be a problem unless there is a big leak there [sometimes fuel will just seep out of a small crack that isn't big enough to allow much of a vacuum leak]. Get it running fist then decide if the gasket leak is a problem.
