I got your instructions from last nite ,preciate 'em ,they were simple enough to follow ,which I just did ,everything worked just like you said ,I got the little spark from the coil thru the plug ,set everything very carefully,....oh I was so excited...this baby is gonna run now....but it didn't. My first instinct was to check fire at the points(it had that)next I checked plugs to make sure they were firing (they're new).Took one out hooked it up ,held it to a good ground (the block)no fire..... hold it off the block a little(1/8 inch and it will lite up)so it seems to me that the plugs are not firing when grounded. The only other thing I've changed since the tractor last ran was the coil(I put on the right one ,when other owner converted 6/12 ,the primary wire from distributor to coil was hooked to the POS. and the switch key to the NEG ,if I understand correctly this should have been the other way ,which is how I have it now.Do you have an idea of why the plug would not be firing when grounded (could that wire change I noted above be that cause? Oh well its gotten late ....I'll finish piddlin with her tommorow. Thanks very much for the good advice. Robert in La.

Robert, it sounds like for some reason you aren't building secondary voltage or it is bleeding off before it builds high enough to jump the plug gap.
~Do you have solid core plug wires on it [not auto TVRS carbon core wires].
~You don't by chance have a resistor in the system or a 12 volt coil on it? [try a known good 6 volt coil]
~Make SURE you have full battery voltage at the coil,, [the ignition switches are noted for failing to a high resistance state on the 40-420 lowering the coil current]. Or you could have a ballast resistor from the 12 volt conversion still in the primary circuit somewhere. Try running battery power directly from the starter big power post to the coil negative side.
~If all checks out per above try installing an original condenser [I have found some replacements effect coil collapse & therefore slow the spark enough to allow bleed off]
~I know you don't want to hear this but try another set of spark plugs, partially fouled plugs are the leading cause of no spark with the plug grounded & a spark with the plug or wire a little ways from ground.
