I would like to hear from anyone with expierence with the direction reverser option. How reliable, any bad points, hard to repair, ect.?? Also does this make one more desirable? Thanks for any input.

I used to own one that was in my 420C parts machine. I sold it because they are a known weak link in the drive train and I did not want to fool with it. They were most common in crawlers which were used for back and forth grading and in wheel tractors used to clean out barns. I believe that the official manual said that you could shift without using the clutch---if you liked living dangerously---, but anyone with any sense used the clutch and waited for the machine to come to a complete stop before shifting and releasing the clutch to go the other way. It would give you four or five speeds in reverse, but is that really necessary? They are not a very large unit and when you consider the amount of energy stored in a 420 flywheel and the thought of applying it suddenly in the oposite direction in a 50 year old machine, they should be used. with care.

Direction reverser is more common on crawlers.

I thought it may be kinda rare. I have owned several 420 and 430's and have never seen one in person either.
