I am ready to install a head gasket on my 49 A,
I ordered a set from deere and have it ready to install, My question is this- The gasket set came with all the gaskets including the one for the cylinder to case and my cylinder to case has been leaking oil for a while, now would be the time to change it. Its easy to read about doing it but I have never done it,is there any trick's I should know about before I start taking the cylinder off?
Should I use a sealer on the new gasket? would spray tack work? Thanks for your help -morgan

And don't forget the oil line for the valve train it's under and between the rods.

Morgan, No frame to cylinder block bolts, throw away the lock washers and replace w/new. I generally replace all lock washers on these machines as they usually are cracked or broken. If this is going to be a restoration now would be the time to clean the front support(frame)and block and paint. gwh

I have good luck with the spray high-tack available at your JD dealership, as it will position securely. Make sure the surfaces are clean, smooth and oil-free and I would use the high-tack to stick the gasket to the main case. One thing to be absolutely sure of, is that you torque the block to the main case evenly and to the proper spec. I have read that the '47 to '49 "A" blocks can crack in a heartbeat if not properly torqued. Also make sure that you remove the bolts running vertically through the frame rail into the block before you try to pry the block free. The blocks can stick in there pretty good, so be patient and careful as you remove the old one. Definitely get a service manual and follow it carefully, as well as make sure you have a good, accurate torque wrench, and adjust the torque setting if you have to use a torque adapter on the nuts.

I'm at the same point with my 49 A. Could you tell me what the proper torque specs are and any recommendations you may have on sequence. I'm assuming top center, bottom center, top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left or similar a little at a time up to around 50 ft lbs. Am I even close?
Thanks in advance

Your head bolts will be torqued to 125 foot pounds, so you will want to torque the block bolts probably a little more. I can't find the exact spec in the book, but if it were mine, I would go to 150 foot pounds, at least.

My memory may be failing, but I can't seem to remember if there are any frame to block bolts. I know the 60 had them as does my 70D, but I can't recall my '48 or '49 "A"'s having them.

Wouldn't want someone to be looking for something that isn't there.

Perhaps someone out there knows for certain.

My mistake. My "G" has them and my "60" has them, so I assumed that the "A" would also. You know what they say about assuming.

Frank, your memory is doing fine. There aren't any frame bolts in those years of blocks on the A. There are 6 bolts for these blocks and in the newer model A's they go up to 8 bolts but none go through the front frame like the older ones did. I have a 49 apart now trying to get a good block machined for it. I don't know what the torque spec is for it though and I am not at all sure how accurate my torque wrench is. How close do those 1/2" click type ones stay in calibration?
