Have noticed that on a lot of the Dubuques, the final drives will leak around the drawbar bolts, seems a couple of these are threaded all the way into the oil resivoir. I have tried putting silicone sealer around the threads, anyone have a better fix?

Years ago when we pulled heavy hay balers with our JD Model A tractors, we always had trouble with the hitches coming off. There was no way to resist the weight and back-and-forth motion of the engine-driven balers so the bolts would loosen. We ended up converting to studs and that way we used up a lot more of the useable thread in the holes, and the studs held a lot better than the big cap screws did. There was no such thing as Loc-Tite in those days, or we would have used it as well. I am a HUGE believer in using studs in place of bolts.....they are pesky to make and install, but they are sooooo much better.

Wayne, Loctite makes products that are thread lockers and sealers in a couple different strengths. Since those are bolts you're not likely to remove often, I would use the high-strength clear version. Make sure to clean the bolt and the hole up well with something to remove any oil residue so it will cure properly. Coat the threads well, install the bolts and torque to spec. The sealer will set up in a matter of minutes in the absence of air. I've also had good results using ordinary tefloon tape on the bolts that screw into the sides of the heads on Deere 400-series engines, as they have a tendency to seep oil.
