What would you folks recommend be used for gasket sealers for 2cyl gas. Places like crankcase to block, manifold to head, head to block, coolant pipes to block etc.
Thanks in advance

Dutch, as John said everybody has a little different product & procedure that works for them.
~I guess everybody should post what works for them & you can choose from there & develop your own process.
~On the intake/exhaust manifold I use a little #3 Permatex around the intake port(s) only [nothing around the exhaust],,,on the block to case gasket I used to use #3 Permatex but for the last few years I have been using LocTite 515 or 518 gasket reinforcement. That stuff isn't real cheap but does an excellent job of making sure there will never be a leak problem at that area. [the Permatex worked good but I wasn't happy with the way it would bubble through the paint after the engine got hot a few times],,,I still use #3 Permatex on the head gasket as I have had good luck with it over the years & never had a leaker [the use of Permatex or other sealer on the head gasket mandates a hot re-torque though],,,on the coolant pipes & other gaskets I use LocTite 515 or 518 [I love that stuff]. I still use #3 Permatex on the odd gasket or any other place I might want to remove later to work on.
~I'm to the point now that I use a lot of LocTite 518 & don't use a gasket at all, that stuff was designed to eliminate gaskets in the auto industry & I have found it does a excellent job of replacing gaskets especially on older tractors that the elimination of a gasket will tighten the bearing cover or remove shaft play due to bearing spinning in the case or cover. I also use it between bearing shims & other places that oil is likely to seep out [I hate oil leaks & spend a good deal of energy in making sure everything is sealed to the best of my ability] ~I refuse to use silicone gasket products as they will eventually leak & once a leak starts there is no way to just tighten the bolts & stop it. We have used that stuff in the auto industry for years now & have had our share of problems with it. If the flanges & gasket surfaces are designed with silicone gasket use in mind it can be made to work but that involves special stand offs & other clamping limiters to keep the silicone from squeezing down too thin.
~I clean every gasket surface with brake clean or lacquer thinner prior to using any gasket sealer & usually put a little sealer on every bolt installed to keep oil from wicking along the bolt threads & seeping out from under the bolt head. It sounds like a lot of work but once a procedure is established it is quick & easy to do & will go a long ways towards stopping those little oil seeps that make a mess of the painted surfaces around bolts & flanges.

Thanks Clooney,
I'll give the 518 a try. I agree on the silicone, I think that stuff usually makes more of a mess than it's worth. I'm sure we've all seen it oozing out of places on cars, trucks, boats, tractors and anywhere else that it's been used and it usually not only looks bad but doesn't last as you said.

Dutch, there are alot of opinions and products on this and many do things differently, but you asked, so heres what I use. On the manifold to head, I dont use anything BUT I have BOTH the manifold and head (in that area) planed down smooth, use hardened studs with anti sieze grease, and stainless steel nuts and lockwashers also with antisieze. (retorque after a good warm up or 2) Ive never had one go bad or leak done that way. On the head gasket, I spray it lightly with K & W Copper Kote, many recommend nothing there. Same thing, a smooth planed down head surface is the best sealer. I also re torque the head gasket a time or 2 after a good warm up. On other typical gaskets, I like No. 2 Non Hardening Permatex. I only use silicone in places Im tryign to fill in gaps or I dont have a gasket, because it, being slick as Henry showed me, doesnt allow a nice metal to cork gasket bond. More important than any gasket dope, is good clean oil free surfaces. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

I'll clean it up real good and antiseize and seal anywhere I can. I had many rusted bolts and studs that played heck on me and I'm not going through that again. I think I am going to use something on the head gasket as well, either Copper Kote or maybe the 518 that Clooney suggested. I don't see any disadvantage to using something (as long as it's been tried before)I hate leaks and it's a real kick in the pants to have one after all of the hard work that goes into a project. Thanks for your help.

Dutch, don't use 518 on the head gasket, it's not made for that. 518 is a gasket reinforcement for paper gaskets or as a stand alone gasket replacement. You missed the head gasket part of my post, I use #3 Permatex on the head gasket.

Thanks for keeping an eye on me Clooney. As my wife says I'm a full time job.
