I have an '82 2940 and am having steering problems. The power steering will go into emergency steering while running. It seems to be arbitrary as to when it happens. There is a whining noise in the transmission, I am assuming it is the pump. When you can hear the whining, the steering works, if the whining stops, the steering goes to emergency steering. I have cleaned the oil screen and replaced the hyd. filter. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Mike, I am assuming when the steering stops you also loose other hydraulic functions as well? Lower the hitch and drive the tractor when the steering fails you, see if the hitch will raise I expect not. If this is the case the front main hydraulic pump is not getting adequate oil from the transmission pump (probably what you are hearing) The transmission elements (two speed & PTO) either have an internal leak to sump or there is a line cracked on the pump itself leaking internally. When problem occurs shift the two speed and see if your hydraulics / steering returns, give it a little time to return. If you find that your problem is only present in one mode and not the other that tells me that there is a leak on one side of the two speed circuit. Do the same test with the PTO turn it on and drive the tractor and see if your problem stays or goes away. You may find that there is a leak either on the PTO brake or clutch depending on if the PTO is turned on or off when you loose your hydraulics. It was not uncommon to have transmission pump lines crack on these tractors and cause this scenario. Tractor will have to be split in half at transmission levers to fix any of these possibilities Good Luck, Dave W.

Dave,
I went through the different scenerios over the weekend. With the 2 speed in the low range, both the transmission and main hydraulic pumps whin like crazy. However, everthing works, steering, PTO, 3 point. On the high side, both pumps run quite but no 3 point and no steering, PTO works. I an assuming that this means the problem is in the hi-low. Any thoughts? Thanks

Mike, Sounds like you have a leak on the high side of your two speed. The reason the front pump goes quite is because it is not getting any oil from the rear pump and in return not supply any oil pressure or flow to you high pressure functions (steering, SCV's & 3 point). PTO works because it if supplied oil from the rear transmission pump not your front pump. Basically your tractor has two pumps one supplying the other, before the (rear) transmission pump can supply the (front) main hydraulic pump the two speed and PTO must have all the oil it needs to function first which is controlled by a valve between the two pumps. This valve opens when enough pressure is reached to run the two speed and PTO and allows oil from the rear transmission pump to flow forward to the main pump. In your case the two speed is leaking on the high side causing not enough pressure to be obtained due to this leak causing the pressure control valve to shut off oil flow to the front pump. You also may learn that the PTO clutch may slip under load when the two speed is on the high side as the leak may be causing the clutch pressure to drop. Hope this is not confusing you more. Main thing is that it sounds like you have your problem isolated to the high side of your two speed. Good Luck Dave W.
