I have a 41 handstart B that I very much enjoy. I have a home-made 3 point hitch on it so I run a finishing mower and back blade, nothing that needs it to work hi-performance. It needed a new muffler, so I bought a cheapie one at TSC. If I put it on rightside up, it doesn't fit. If I put it upside down, it fits perfectly. I ran it that way all summer and it seems to be ok. I got to thinking though, maybe I should ask you guys. Do you think this would cause too much back pressure? It starts and runs nice, and is nice and quiet too.

John, to quote an oft heard line, if it aint broke dont fix it, since you say it runs well. I suspect its a simple open center with slots to the outer core design, in which case the direction of flow doesnt make much difference. Even if it were a closed loop where the gases go out of one chamber and into another separate one, I doubt if there would be excess restriction to the point it would hurt you much even if ran in reverse. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

John, that would depend on the design of the muffler, if just a basic louvered design with the center necked down it probably doesn't matter. [can you look through it?] ~If a center baffle plate(s) type with slotted rings or spaced plates it will probably change the back pressure. [you won't be able to see through that one].

John/Clooney,
It is the simple open center design with the holes down the center. Thank you so much for your answers. Your friend John in North Dakota
