I am about to do a valve job on the head of my 1940 A and was wondering, since the engine is pretty fresh, if I could get away with putting bigger valves in, for a little more power. What would I have to do? I'm sure that I would have to getnew valve seats put in, but I have heard of people moving the exhauste valve to the intake side, and installing a bigger valve in the exhaust. What kind of valve would I use? Can this even bo done on an A? Is it really worth it? I don't have a BURNING DESIRE to do this, but I figured that I would do it if it was inexpensive and since I had it apart already..input would be appreciated....

You will probably get the most "Bang for your Buck", by having a GOOD valve job...including having the valves back/cut.....Metal removed from the back side of the valve (port side), in varying angles, from the stem area, to the seat contact area... This will not only lighten the valve, but you gain airflow in several ways....it increases the EFFECTIVE valve opening & Duration and allows more air flow at lower lift.... Is the next best thing to changing cams.... AND it won't cost you a whole lot... Of course, this does assume you are having a GOOD 3-angle valve job, in the first place... Stem/Guide clearances should be minimal, also.. At least to Minimum specs.. Any engine I have done this to has shown a VERY noticeable power increase...more than expected, to be sure...!!

AC,

Difficult to see how bigger valves would do a lot of good without bigger ports, bigger carb throats, bigger exhaust tubes, more lift and cam duration, and so on.

One thing calls for another, as they say.
