I'm going to look at a 1949 JD-A that the man says is making a noise in the governer. How much trouble and money can a novice get into working on the governer. How hard are they to rebuild.

Dave, the governor can be both VERY expensive plus difficult to work on for a novice. Many of the bearigns and gears are press fit on the shaft plus the fan shaft and governor bevel gears, if needed, should be a matched set are very expensive plus have to have their mesh and proper backlash set. Thats not to mention the weights and pins. Governor whine is often due to excess worn or mis meshed bevel gears or excess backlash. The mesh and backlash is set by adding/removing shims in both the fan shaft and bearing flanges which may be a little tricky for a novice. If it needs bevel gears and bearigns plus pins and that is done at like a John Deere dealer, it could cost hundreds of dollars. Its possible you could luck out and it only needs the fan shaft backlash tightened (remomving/adjusting shims) which is the cause of whine or noise and/or the end bearings may need replaced. I have seen many where the bevel gears are worn down razor sharp causign a loud whining noise. I dont intend to scare you because a simple governor gear mesh and backlash adjustment might help, but wanted to warn you if the gears and bearings and pins are all worn out, youre looking at big bucks. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Dave, that depends on what the noise is, how familiar you are with mechanical repairs, what type of pullers & an arbor press you have & where you would buy your replacement parts.
~I can't give you a cost to repair as I don't know the problem or if the present owner has worked on it incorrectly before.
~They aren't that hard to rebuild if you have done one before but you will need a good manual & even help from this board.
~In some cases, especially if you haven't been into one before it is easier & cheaper to buy a good used governor form a local [trusted] used tractor parts business.
~I know I haven't given you much to go on but without more specifics from you on the noise origin [there are many things in a governor that can create a noise] & your expertise with tools I can't give you much.
~The good thing about a 49 "A" is there are plenty of cheap used parts out there for it as many are being parted out.
