I got my tractor started and going then i was going to replace the manifold and other things. Before then i really had a handfull trying to sping the fly wheel to get it started. Now after i have striped the manifold down and there is nothing on it except a block i have no compresion. Even now that i have the new manifold on i still have very little compression but it is not on very tight bc i dont know how much i should crank down on it or if i need a torqe wrench. I dont know alot about this old tractor so i am asking yall. Please tell me if it sounds like i blew the head gasket or if there is something that i removed that needs to be put back on for compressing. I checked the rings and pistons and they only had a little bit of slack no more than what they had when it was running. It just seems wierd to me that it would be running one day with a normal amount of compression and now it has none and the fly wheel spins freely. Please give me some info on how to figure this one out.

Suspect that you had gunk from inside the manifold fall into the intake port while removing the old manifold. Now the valves are no longer closing tight. If you remove the air inlet pipe from the front of the carb, place throttle in fast idle, leave the choke open (run position) I suspect you'll hear considerable hissing past the valves. If they're stuck open on some really big chunks, all may be silent but you will be able to feel vaccuum and pressure both while someone else cranks it for you.

This is a long shot but does the H hand start have the compression release cocks on it? Could they have been opened by someone? Bout the only thing I can think of to cause sudden loss of compression on both cyl's! If the cocks are open you should still hear them hissing as the engine is turned over.

Did you knock some rust or dirt loose, that fell in the head, and is preventing the valves from closing completely?

Justin, you said you checked the rings & pistons, does that mean you had them out of the tractor? If so did you get the head on correctly & set the valves correctly?
~As for the compression suddenly going away: Nothing to do with the manifold should effect the compression, [that is a function of the pistons, cylinder, valves & valve to piston position]. If you haven't had the head off, or messed with the cam, cam bearings or valve setting & the spark plugs are still in it, you should have compression. ~You might try turning the crank so one piston at a time is at TDC on compression then blowing some compressed air into the spark plug hole for that cylinder. Where the air comes out will tell you what is leaking.
~If you suddenly lost compression you might have a piece of old manifold gasket caught in a valve or if you used solvent to clean the manifold surface on the head you could have washed the cylinder walls of oil. If you think you washed the cylinder walls of oil you might try putting about 3oz of oil in each spark plug hole then turning the flywheel to see if the compression comes back.

Probably a stuck valve.

Absolutely.

The rings and head gasket won't change that fast and nothing else will affect compression.
