Pulling water furrows last week in a wheat field and my 730 blew the head gasket. I was trying to make the year and overhaul it this winter but as it has a lot of blowby and uses a lot of oil. Now when I overhaul it what can I put in it for more power? Overbore or more fuel or what?

Thanks guys for the advice. I will be a man with a mission when time allows me to work on it. I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with the fuel system. It's just that this tractor is having to compete with a M670 MM LP for a position and it's about 10 horses short. I want to be able to play my favorite player! I think quite a bit will be gained by an overhaul as it is using about a quart of oil per hour.

Scott, Mr. Thinker gave you good advice. In my estimation you want to build for durability instead of power. The secret is not to lose any power on the rebuild. Watch the valve seat recession & valve angles & don't lower the valves as that will lower compression.
~If that thing has been low on power you might look to the air cleaner [wire mesh inside the can] as those have a habit of plugging with dirt & becoming restricted [especially if you have had a power steering leak], or the transfer pump, if that isnt working the engine will be low on power.
~You might want to send the pumps & injectors out for calibrating & rebuild while the engine is being overhauled. If you dont intend to send the injectors out, at least install new injector tips. If not sending the injectors & pumps out be very careful that you plug ALL the injector lines & fittings at disassembly time as a spec of dirt in the system can cause you a lot of grief later on. ~Good luck & let the spending begin

Whatever overbore is needed isn't going to make much difference in the horsepower----the key to making horsepower in a 2-cylinder diesel is the fuel system. If the engine is in good shape (rings, valves, valve guides) a 730 with a properly rebuilt fuel system should make somewhere between 70 and 75 horsepower with the injection pump racks set to wide open. More horsepower than that gets very costly, very fast, and will compromise other areas. A tip----until the engine has warmed up, don't put a heavy load on it----use one gear lower than you usually would, and that will go a long way towards keeping head gaskets in them.
