Well, my 49G runs. But it has a little knock. Opened up the crankcase. The rods on the crank are a little loose. But there is a good amount of play at the wrist pin. I know it is time to take the pistons out. Do I have to do anything to the crank to put rods in with inserts?? Who has them? Any idea how much they will be? I have been told by people the insert rods are better than Babbitt. Are they? The G was unstuck by the previous owner. I think the bushings in the connecting rods might have got damaged then?? Thanks for the answers.

Just wondering is that knock for sure not your flywheel letting your crank have too much side play? Assuming the flywheel is OK, then I am curious how the previous owner "unstuck" the tractor. I have heard bad things about rods getting bent and such when that happens if done wrong. Does the knock get louder or softer if you take off one or the other spark wires from the dist? That might clue you in more where the problem is if it makes a difference. Does timing change anything? Hate to fix something any more expensive than need be.

Well, I had to take the flywheel off because it was off 3 splines. It has very little side play now. The previous owner is 87 years old. He got it unstuck by using alcohol in the cylinders and putting bolts in the flywheel and using a bar to walk back and forth. The knock can be heard when you just put a load on the motor. You won't hear it at idle. If you rock the flywheel back and forth there is play. Opened the crankcase and looked at it. Put my hand on the connecting rod by the wrist pin and it moves way too much. Just looking at my options. New aluminum pistons? Insert rods? Or leave it all-fuel. It is all there and will work. She won't be a puller. Just farm work and belt power for a thresher. Thanks for the input.

you can have your old rods machined out so you can put inserts in them.I had this done a couple of years ago cost $35.00 a rod and 70.00 for the inserts [both rods] have your crank checked as inserts come in under size if needed.
