Wednesday, a couple of us looked at a 1941 'B' that our (young) friend [tb] is considering for his first project. He farms with "New Generation"
equipment, but is developing a serious taste for
two-cylinders. Well-kept, one owner, serial number rubbed off but might be in operator's manual if found.Straight tin-work (might be original paint/decals);all-fuel system complete/intact;shutter system complet/intact;front rims mismatched but rear rims good;cast rear centers;old-style Goodyear rubber about 90%; no rockshaft but pto and drawbar look hardly used. Has proper JD starter/lites/generator kit installed-intact except for rear lite and bracket broken-off.
We weren't able to drive it but it did start easily and ran well. There are some concerns about the transmission. (Engine running) it didn't
go into reverse;1-3;5-6 (in our opinion) properly.
It was good in 2-4 but the selector stuck badly in neutral between 1-3 / 2-4 and again in neutral between 2-4 / 5-6. Rick and I are not tranny experts and we already advised him to drive it in all gears, under pull and coast conditions.
We both thought that this would be a good first project for [tb] and his little boy. He is 'brand-new' to this site and I told him that this forum is helpful and friendly (generally) and that there would be some 'veterans' that might be willing to share their thoughts, so how about it ? Anyone willing
to comment on a '41 'B' for a first project ? How
about some range of 'fair value' as described?
Any idea of what he might run into in the tranny?
Let's help out a 'newbie'. Thanks fellas. pb

Hey poorerbutt I have a '41 B that I am currently working on. Mine sounds about the same condition as the one your talking about. When I got it it didn't run (needed plugs, wires, points, condenser and gas). After installing all that it ran great. However it would not go into 1-3, R or HI range. Dug into the tranny and found that the shifter for 1-3 and R aswell as HI LO was rusted to the shaft. I have not got them seperated from the shaft yet but I got good used stuff to replace it all from Melanie Sharp at oldjd4u.com. I looked at everything else in the tranny and it looked all good. I love that '41 and can't wait till she is ready to go. As far as first project go for it. I think any Deere is good for a first project!!! Any questions post back or email. I will be glad to help
