Thanks VERY MUCH to all the folks who gave me so many good suggestions on my turtle problem. The A's running like a Deere now. First I checked the #1 cyl compression again. Still good. I dedicided that I'd check the fuel system again from top to bottom (tank to carb). I'd checked the fuel flow in the past by disconnecting it at the carb and letting fuel run out, and had good flow at that time, but that was before I adjusted the offending rocker. I checked again and had just a trickle coming out. Dismantled the whole fuel system, cleaned the sediment bowl, which was gummed up with black, gooey schmutz, blew air through the lines, and out came more black, gooey schmutz. I don't know what it was ... maybe the dregs of the fuel that sat in it for 30 years before I drained it out when I first got the tractor? Anyway, I reassembled everything, refilled the tank, and checked the fuel flow at the carb again. It was much better. Reconnected the fuel line to the carb, cranked it over, it started, and it ran like a champ. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Whew! There's nothing like finding something WRONG. When a machine won't work and you CAN'T find anything wrong..... that's when it gets difficult. When you think about it, there really isn't much "slope" to get the fuel to the carb on a JD with a near-empty fuel tank. I haven't been to a tractor pull for years, but I remember a guy who had a "G" puller that had oversized fuel lines on it for that very reason. Our "A" was settin' and had only been run a little during each corn season to power an auger. When they tried to start it in late August, it wouldn't even "pop". It ended up at the dealer for a tune up, attracted a lot of attention, and a bidding war ensued which we won..... .luckily.
