I'm restoring a AR and noticed that when I turn the flywheel backwards it goes a little ways and then catches and stops. The engine is torn apart and I watch the camshaft slide to the left where the clutch is. When I turn it the right way it turns the full revolution and does not catch and stop. Are there adjustment that has to be made to tighten the camshaft so that it does not have any end play or is it normal to have end play when the engine is turned backwards. Thank you for you time. Randy

And when you pull the reduction gear, be sure to check the reduction gear bearing....,.out of 5 A's 4 had bad ones or maybe luck is not with me this year... anyway, it'll make that trans just howl...though I'd mention it...forewarned is forearmed...

AC, Thanks for the advice but I have already found this out. When I took the cover off I noticed that the nut on the reduction gear had a big spike holding it instead of a cotter key. I also noticed that someone had taken the wires off the bolts and just put them back on without tying the wire back together. So I took the transmission cover off and found two gears completely striped. The shafts look good but I won't know for sure until I take them out and check the out for sure. This tractor has a High and Low on it.I hope that I will be able to find gears for it. Do you know of any where you are at? With all of the junk yard out there I sould be able to find some. Thanks again for responding to my add. Randy

The "spring" that Clooney mentioned might be stuck, ( I had that)and you need to pull the reduction gear cover and push it loose and clean...

Randal, do you mean the camshaft moves to the right? The right side is the clutch side.
~If it moves to the clutch side when turning backwards & you have the 1st reduction cover off there is [was] a spring on the R/H side that holds the cam bearing race against the cam bearing. If that springs isn't installed there will be nothing holding the cam bearing & race from moving to the right....
