I HAVE JUST BOUGHT AN JD-H AND I HAVE A QUESTION.
IT I SET THE THROTTLE TO WHERE THE SPRING IS JUST OFF THE LEVER AND I HAVE IT ON FULL CHOKE I CAN PULL ONCE OR TWICE ON HALF CHOKE ON THE SECOND OR THIRD TRY IT WILL TRY TO START BUT IF I MISS THAT CHANCE SHE WILL NOT START NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRY BY HAND. THEN I WILL HAVE TO PULL IT WITH ANOTHER TRACTOR AND IT WILL RIGHT AWAY. ANY HINTS?

I WAS ALSO TOLD TO USE AVIATION GAS 100 OCTANE SINCE IT VAPORIZES BETTER AND WILL START BETTER?

Clooney said it all. I might add on my H, I open the throttle until it is about a quarter to half inch from stop pin. Set choke about half. Mine starts good at this setting on the first or second pull on the fly wheel. As soon as it starts grab the choke lever and start opening it.

GERRY, you just might have to pay your dues.
~Those old hand starts are all a little different & require a little different approach to get them started. Try different throttle settings & different choke settings.
~Make sure the fuel is new & there is no alcohol in it. I doubt av gas will help & in reality will probably hurt.
~I have found that opening the plug gap to .040" will sometimes improve starting. ~Try opening the idle needle a little more for starting only. ~Make sure the spring loaded trap door in the choke plate is closing & functional.
~Try advancing the timing about 1/2" before L/H impulse.
~Make sure the mag is giving you a blue spark & the plug wires are solid core steel or copper [no TVRS auto wires].
~Give it a cold compression test & if low add a little 2 cycle oil to the gas to help the rings seal at slow cranking speeds.
~Maybe just putting some running time on the engine will help if it hasn't been used in a while.
