Intermittent Spark from Wico X Magneto

My Wico X magneto is only producing a spark part time. The tractor had sat for some time outside. I cleaned the points, reset them and put new plugs and plug wires (solid steel core)on the tractor. It ran fine for awhile. Now the magneto is only sparking part time. In fact, as the tractor ran, it seemed like the spark got weaker and weaker. I thought I would try new points and condenser. I can turn the flywheel and the mag may or may not produce a spark. Any ideas from the experts?

Thanks

cheg, several things could be wrong, but a new set of points and a condensor are always a good thing to try as you indicated you are going to do. A weak spark at hand crank may be due to a weak spring and trip assembly, since if either is weak, the rotating magnet passes too slowly past the coil to produce a good spark when hand cranking. However, at over about 250 RPM thats not an issue (running at crank speed then with no wind up and trip over occurring) assuming all is operating properly. If the points and condensor are okay and the spark grows weak with use, you could have a coil that is breaking down (high voltage insulation failure) after it warms up. Condensors can fail after warmed up also, but that doesnt sound like your problem. Other problems I have seen are worn shaft bearings which allows excess wobble which increasing the point gap may help. Intermittent shorts of the coil and points wiring to case ground are always another possibility. Other intermittent spark problems can be due to cracks, carbon paths, or problems in the cap and/or rotor and contact spring assembly which may cause the high voltage to arc at points other than deliverign a spark out the cap to the wires. Bottom line is inspect the cap and rotor and point wiring (for shorts or a shorted kill wire) and if new points and condensor doesnt help, post back. If it has a kill wire stud out teh side of the case, be sure its not grounding out also. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana.

Cheg, first thing clean the points of ALL oxidation [or better yet install new] , then see what happens. Re-set the points to .015". ~Remove the cap & hook a paper clip or other wire to the case & bend to 1/4" of the coil button & see if you have a blue spark that appears all the time [if so suspect the cap or rotor as the problem]. If you still don't get a consistent spark, remove the coil & clean the coil core of rust & remove any rust from the magnetic rotor & iron surrounding the rotor. Make sure all the internal wires don't have corroded connections & aren't pinched & grounding.
~Make sure the impulse is snapping good or you won't get a good cranking spark.
~If new points , & cleaning the inside doesnt help you might want to try a new coil.
