Clooney, I have a completly shot tranny in my 720D. I mean bad enough that I took the side covers off and gears fell out. It is a 58, we had talked about it earlier. anyways, I am wondering what would be a fair price for a complete good trans. for it. Caseing gears and all in good shape???? How much would it weigh???? Help soon.

Brad I jumped the gun on a reply. I saw where you think the case is cracked. If you have the abillity and change the case you will pretty well end up with a from the ground up
restoration. If you have lots of spare time you can get it done if you can buy the parts reasonable. But you might also consider buying another tractor that runs good and putting your parts on it. Good luck as I like to see these old tractors put back together rather than rusting away.

I have found a good parts tractor that has what I need on it. See I have the tractor completly apart right now. I think it is in more peices than it was in at the factory. It amazes me that anyone can get them back together. Anyways I am just trying to see what anyone would pay or has paid for one of these complete trans. Thanks

Brad; I guess if it was mine I would estimate the price based on the price of the gears and shafts out of a central tractor used parts book
that should give a good starting point.

Brad ; don't jump the gun on a whole tranny. I think I saw your earlier post and you have never worked on one of these before. and some one told you that this model is not a good one for beginners and I agree. Also if you are planning to swap the tranny and case from another tractor you have to remove the whole engine also. The gear that fell out might just be the 4 th and 6th sliding gear and it is common for these to fall out when the cover is off on most models I don't have my books here to look it up. If this is your first tranny I'd recommend talking to the mechanics at your local dealer shop
and see if any of them know these trannies and try to get one to come to your place after work
for a reasonable fee and help you to fix it.

I have worked on these before and I do have a old john deere mechanic here. He is the one that said I needed to find a complete trans due to the fact that so much is bad in the trans. Both shafts are ruined and 4 gears a missing at least 3 teeth.

If a good 720 is worth around $4200.00, and the tranny is about one sixth of the tractor, then it's worth around $700.00 If I was smart like Clooney, I'd just keep my mouth shut!

Brad, I don't comment on prices as that is private matter between the buyer & seller. ~I would suggest you call around to see what the same pieces would cost from some of the tractor parts yards then use that to base your offer on.
~I'm not sure I can help with the weight either. How much of the trans & case are you looking at. [what is included on either end?]

I am looking at a trans. from a person who doesnt know what to ask and I dont neither and he suggested posting a add on here and going by what everone thinks it would be worth. It goes from right at the back of the floor pan to the engine block, maybe 3 ft??? All gears are in it and bearings.

Brad, are the crankshaft, camshaft, main bearings & flywheel still in it? Or just a gutted case with the trans gears & diff gears & PTO gears in it. ~I still can't give you anything definite on the weight. I have had a few diesels down to bare case with the case out but never just swapped a loaded trans case from tractor to tractor. I'll GUESS a little over 1000lbs without the crank, flywheel or diff, but don't bet the farm on that number. ~How far do you have to ship it or can you go & get it? If it has to go very far then maybe you can find someone shipping a load that has room to add the trans case..

I think it will be just the trans. case with gears. But now the guy is wanting to sell me the whole tractor that he has left. Motor, frame, trans., and rear. I think it would be just as good to give him the money for this one and be done with it. I only give 1,800, for this one with a wide front and 3pt, electric start. so I dont want to give alot for this one that is in peices. Thanks for any advice
