I am thinking of buying a 420 at an auction. what I would be using it for is pulling or slow race. until I go to the sale I don`t know if it is a 4 or 5 speed. the serial # is u-90675. where can I find the specs that would tell me the speed in different gears and max r.p.m.

One of the best descriptions and histories of the M through 440's if J.R. Hobbs's book Little Giants. That combined with the parts CD answeres most questions and what parts can be mixed and matched. That's a 1956 model year with a four speed, transmission driven pto, all green paint with the 40 style starter mount.

If the tractor you are looking at has its original tranny, it is a 4 speed, like mine is.(serial # 83327) Were no 5 speeds til serial # 100001

staco,

Four speed was standard, 5 speed was optional.

Here are the speed in gear specs for the 4 speed:

1 1.62
2 3.12
3 4.25
4 12.00
R 2.50

Rated RPM is 1850

staco,

You're welcome. Model A covers a lot of ground, or I should say time. I can find only find info on the late model 6 speeds (the early A's were 4 speeds), which are similar to my 60 --

Gear Speed 1st 2.5 mph 2nd 3.5 mph 3rd 4.5 mph 4th 5.75 mph 5th 7.75 mph 6th 13.0 mph Reverse 4.0 mph

The most comprehensive single web site for 2 cylinder JD info I know of is Rummy's www.johnnypopper.com . But that doesn't have it all. You might be able to find archived info from the Nebraska tests at various sites, they do have speed info, but not all tractors were tested - and some they want to sell you the info.

If you really want to get overboard -- there's an auction on ebay now of a collection of over 1,000 old JD manuals. The bid is now at 761 dollars. Wow.
