Transfer Valve Position

Got a question regarding identifying the correct position for a fuel transfer valve on a 1948 G. The linkage is so sloppy that there is no longer any relationship between the handle position of the dash-mounted fuel transfer handle (O-G-F) and the actual position of the transfer valve. I can't get gas through the transfer valve (probably gunked up with anchient fuel), but also don't even know if I have the valve in the correct position. There is a small finger attached to and parallel to the stem of the valve that moves with the stem so I'm sure that it shows the position of the valve. Can some one tell me the correct position for this finger to flow fuel from the main tank? Got fuel through sediment bulb but not through transfer valve. Thanks, John in OH

Just got through cleaning up and repacking one of these on my G. The finger on the valve you are referring to only moves 90 degrees. On mine, when the dash handle is in the F position the finger is in a horizontal postion, when dash handle is at O, the finger is vertical, dash handle at G, finger is in between at 45 degrees, hope this helps

Off would be straight down, gas would be pointing right, and fuel would be straight up, that is the handle. Usually you have to take the valve apart and clean it all up good and put in new seals. You can get these thru deere. Good Luck

Gpower, Are you referring to the handle at the dash? I need to know how the small finger actually on the transfer valve relates to the valve position. Linkage between dash handle and valve is too sloppy to be useful in determining valve position. Thanks

John..... you aren't by some chance mistaking the brass lever on the sediment bowl shut-off for the transfer valve are you? The sediment "bub" has it's own shutoff as well and that is independent of the transfer valve. Many folks used to shut the fuel off there at the bowl if the transfer valve didn't seal all that good. I think the bowl is just on the main tank, but it's been a while since I was on an all-fueler.

CJ, Nope, I'm not confusing the sediment bulb shutoff with the transfer valve in this situation. The transfer valve is connected via a very worn & sloppy linkage to a handle on the dash that is marked O-G-F. However, due to the sloppy linkage there is now no relationship between the handle and the actual valve position. There is, however, a small metal finger about 1" long on the transfer valve that rotates with the valve stem and is parallel with the stem. Kind of hard to describe if you haven't see it before. The finger sure looks like a position indicator, however there is no marking on the valve itself that allows me to determine what flow path the valve is in. I was hoping that someone could give me a correlation between the flow path and the finger position.
