I have 12 ton jack with 3/8 chain running through wheel, an jack on end of axle. I have tried heat but don't want to heat cast piece to much. I'm not to sure how much heat would be to much. Have even drove an jabbed brakes on.

On my '48 NOTHING worked until I made a puller out of scrap metal and all thread. Then with my and my neighbor's torches, we worked on that sucker at the same time, and tightened the all thread till it almost flew off the axle. By the way, hubs were heated to cherry red with no ill effects

Soak it with PB Blaster. Remove the clamp. Drive it around the farm slowly for an hour. Watch for the hubs to move. Soak it again. Drive it around.
Soak it again. Drive it around. If it can't be driven, remove the clamps, put a jack/chain on the axle, apply tension, then heat the hubs. You won't hurt them.

Another vote for driving it around. If it won't drive, pull her around the pasture. Soaking with your favorite penetrant will always help.

Pappy,

Glad to hear there's another PB Blaster fan out there.

Bruce, I soaked the hub and axle everyday by shooting penetrating oil in the slots and around the axle, put pressure like you did and tapped the hub each day until it came loose, it took about 2 weeks. What I found when I got it off was not only rust but full of dirt. I made a tool to keep pressure on the hub and axle. Need a picture let me know and I will email it to you. John D

I can never remember the exact name, but there is a product called PB Blaster (I think) that works better than Liquid Wrench or any other penetrating oil. It can be found in auto supply stores in the same area as Liquid Wrench.

It will take a while, but my '41 B clamps and hubs loosened up enough (over a period of months) that I could just grab the wheel and work it back and forth until the hub started sliding.

It's worth a try.

The record setting one on my 420 popped at 75 tons. That was without oil or heat though.

Jack up and start penetrating oilin slots and splines rotating a little every half day. JD shop uses sledge on end of axle on rack and pinion models to set up vibration. Then try jack. Hope you have success.
