Clooney.....what is the most likely route for engine crankcase oil to find it's way into the transmission housing? Which seal (part number) should I suspect is the leaker?? Thanks!

Blksmok, the first place & most likely is the R/H crankshaft main bearing oil seal(s). The second & least likely is the L/H timing gear cover gasket between the trans & timing gear area.
~The P/N of the R/H seal is AF-2426R [2 used back to back] but it might have been subbed by now [I haven't installed those seals in a 70D for a few years].
~The seals aren't hard to install [be careful you don't block the oil drain back hole]. You can use a dent pulling slide hammer with a small sheetmetal screw welded on to pull the seals. The hard part is pulling that darn PTO drive gear from the crankshaft so you can access the seals....

I know I have had the trany out of my 70D.. but I thought the right hand side where the First reduction gear is.. is seperated from the rear end.. and has engine oil in it.. This tractor does not have a live PTO so it is a little different.. more like the G's.. Left side?? didn't think it was connected to the tranny at all?? Somebody shed some light on my lack of memory... Thanks

JDGnut, on the Diesel only the 1st/3rd gear depression in the trans case isn't covered by a tin cover but is covered by the timing gear cover on the L/H side of the engine. The gasket on the cover separates the engine oil from the trans depression as well as sealing the cover to the tractor.
~On the trans driven PTO;.. It's been years since I have been into a non live PTO on a 70D so I did a little research. Both live & non live use engine oil seals on the R/H main bearing, both use the same input shaft cover with the oil scoop on it that returns the oil to the trans case through the bearing [that would scoop engine oil into the trans if the 1st reduction cover used engine oil], the main case is the same so there is no oil return to the crankcase from the 1st reduction cover area, the owners manual says to put trans gear oil in the 1st reduction cover with no mention of a difference for trans driven PTO.....

Thanks.. I looked at my 70D this am.. and I guess on the left hand side I was thinking of the G's with the seperate covers engine and trans... I'll take your word on the right side.. I'll have to get my book out and try to refresh my memory.. haha.. Thanks for the info... JDGnut

Clooney.....Thanks! That's kind of what I figured . I replaced that seal on my 720D and pulling the pto gear was a challenge. It involved a long reach gear puller and a torch to heat the gear. I'm still fighting with the 70D we discussed. In addition to the coolant leak, it had one stuck injector pump, a leaky radiator and this oil leak. It does run good, has a quiet transmission and excellent power steering. More of a "project" that I had hoped for.
