What changes do I need to make to my 1947 A John Deere if I put in a new 6-volt battery instead of a 12-volt? I plan on buying a new coil and would buy the 6-volt coil from Fleet Farm. Feedback? Thanks, Mike

MIke, if you have any light bulbs, you would have to change them. If its a 12 volt starter, it wont crank well at only 6 volts and you will need a 6 volt unit. If its a 12 volt coil with a ballast resistor, all you have to do is remove the now unneeded ballast, otherwise buy a 6 volt coil as you mentioned. If you have a generator, I would just change to a 6 volt voltage regulator. I prefer Gauge 00 starter and ground cables on 6 volt systems. Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Is this a hand start "A"? If not it's most likely a 12 volt starter, and your "A" ain't gonna start on six volts. Stick to 12 volts.
