What size plows and number of acres are best suted? For example, A one bottom plow would be used to plow X number of acres. A two bottom plow would best be used with X number of acres.....Thanks you very much for any information.

I can tell you this to give you some idea...

With our 2 WD-45 AC's, pulling 4x14"....we can turn about 40 acres in a full day- daylite, to after dark... Our JD "B" w/2x14" would turn about no more than 9 acres in the same time.

Tye, this is an age-old question and the answer is "how fast do you want to get done?" Seriously, the formula for finding acres per hour is (machine width in feet x mph x field efficiency x .1212. Field efficiency is how much time is actually spent with the implement working. A machine that never turned or needed fuel and an operator that never stopped would have an efficiency rating of 1. On a job such as plowing a common rating would be around .7 or so. This will get you in the ballpark. A little technical but pretty accurate. Hope this helps. Mike

Less technical and certainly less accurate....width in feet x miles per hour divided by 10 equals acres per hour. Allows for 'pit stops', implement choke-ups, etc

A general rule of thumb for most implements is that for every 10 feet of implement width, you are going to cover about four to five acres per hour at 5 mph. If you are farming say 30 rows, during a 10 hour day your 4-row equipment will cover 40 acres, 8-row covers 80, 12-row covers 120, etc. Of course many variables can effect this but as a general rule, youll find this formula to be pretty accurate.
Later,
John

Tye, I believe that would depend on a number of factors. Tractor size, the size of the fields, width of the bottoms, and so on. One tractor pulling 1-16 at a faster speed could possibly get more done than a slightly larger tractor pulling 2-12s at a slower speed. Obviously, a guy would want the biggest plow he could pull with his tractor without overloading it, regardless of the number of acres he was covering.
