Any idea what this might have been?

When I was growing up my dad bought a farm on which was setting an old J-D on steel. I begged and pleaded with him to let me try to start it and he finally relented. We towed it with our Farmall Super C and it started but would not continue running and would not start again. I have wondered ever since what model of Deere it was. It was smaller than our Farmall C but not as small as a cub. Of course, being on steel it was unstyled. Any thoughts as to the possibilities? Would be fun to see a picture of that little beast again.

How long ago was it that your dad bought this farm? This may help frame a reference point from which to narrow down a timeline (unstyled vs. styled).

Would have been in the mif-fifties. I didn't mention the time frame because I figured that by that time there were no more tractors being produced on steel so the steel piece was probably more relevant.

Well your statement of "Of course, being on steel it was unstyled" It could be styled as they came on steel too. But you can count out the H and L,LA and M. They all came on rubber. Do a search and look for someting that looks like it. Good luck.

I have been trying to recall more about the appearance of that tractor and after reading your comment I almost think it might have been styled. The other thing I remember about it is that it had a narrow front. Most of the pictures I am finding of smaller, older J-D's are wide front. Was narrow frontend unusual back then?

No. Narrow front was common. But all the big collectors save the wide fronts because they are worth more. I have all narrow fronts. An A, B and G. Email me and I will see what I can find to help you out.

Thanks guys. I have been looking through pictures and haven't seen one like it yet so will look for some of the specific possibilities mentioned here. I was just hoping that some of you J-D experts would be able to say that to be that size and on steel the possibilities would be limited to ..... Anyway, I appreciate the suggestions and will keep searching for matching pictures.
