This is part 2 of my previous Glowplug Retrofit question from a week ago. Thanks for all the good answers I got before.

I think I have narrowed down why my 1963 3010 diesel is so hard to start. It appears there are two different strength batteries available for the 3010 tractors. Two 460 CCA batteries are required for the gas and LP 3010 and two 850 CCA batteries are required for the diesel 3010.

Quess what? The previous owner bought two 460 CCA batteries and put them in this diesel tractor. No wonder it cranks so slow and is hard to start.

Can some of you New Gen diesel tractor owners confirm that you have 850 CCA batteries in your units. I would just like to confirm this before I put my money down on some new batteries.

Appreciate your help.

Deere EPC shows the 460 CCA battery (part #TY21733) being used in both the spark ignition and diesel 3010s. However, it also shows one of these batteries being used on the spark ignition tractors and two being used on the diesel. So apparently you have the correct batteries in your tractor. Spark ignition tractors do only have a battery on one side, at least from the factory. It would be pretty simple to install another one. I would fully charge and load test the batteries, as well as carefully inspect the cables and ends. I would also pull the starter off and have it tested as I suggested in the previous post. If you have the correct batteries, as it appears you do, either they are weak or there is another problem. You could install higher CCA batteries, as there is no such thing as too much cranking power, but if you have a problem in the starter, they might not perform any better than what you have now. It would appear that a complete starting system inspection would be in order, and is likely going to isolate your problem with the smallest outlay of cash. Especially if you replace the batteries just to find that you need to fix the starter as well.
