I just got a 720 that has been setting outside for about 12+ years. Owner said the engine over haul was fresh back 12yrs ago..But the tranmission developed a knock..I got the tractor running and when I go in 4th or 6th it knock REAL BAD it even shakes the tractor.. What is the problem that I might been looking for?? and is it a mean job to repair a tranmission? I have never tore into a tranmission before..Help me if you can.. Thanks BEN.....

Ayup. Last year I test drove a 530 in all gears. Ran well. I bought it a month later and lo and behold it had a knock in 4 and 6 gear. With Mr Clooneys insight I was fortunate to just replace one gear ($165) from Deere. Bad tooth in the old one where someone crammed it into sixth. Removed it from the flywheel side without dissecting the inner case. Thanks again Mr. Clooney!

For just 300 bucks and if it runs good....I'd fix the transmission! Nice thing about something for that price, you can put some money into it. Guess I don't like tractors parted if they can be repaired. If within reason of course. Good Luck!

Ben, 4th & 6th uses the same gears so I'm betting you have a tooth broken or missing in the 4th/6th gear set.
~Unfortunately the trans needs to come apart to replace those gears. You can pull the top shifter cover & look down in the trans to see if the 4th/6th gears are broken. Maybe you are lucky & only need the gear on the sliding gear shaft [not much needs to come apart for that].
~That trans on the 720 isn't rocket science but there are a lot of parts including the 1st reduction cover that has to come off. That isn't a good first trans to learn on.
~If the gears are torn up it will get real expensive in a hurry if you keep using it..... ..... .

If it indeed has a rebuilt engine, the owner must've thought the knockin' was in the engine! Is this another LPG machine? If it was cheap enough it may be an excellent parts donor for another tractor.

Thanks for the info. I will probably get it in the shop next week and take a look at it.It might be worth fixing since I only gave 300. for it. I realy bought it for the big square front axle to put it on my 730 tricycle. If it looks bad and prices are to great it would make a parts tractor for my 730lpg the720 is a lpg also. There will more questions when the tear down starts. Thanks again, Ben

Ben, don't want to discourage you, but this is a major job and major expense. Would suggest that you get a mentor on the first tear down but you can do it if you follow an IT manual closely. Just a bunch of big gears and shifters and probably what you have is some badly worn tapered bearings allowing the lower shaft to drop down and throwing gears out of mesh...better restore than tear up all you gears...
