Could anyone set me straight on a couple points, first off I removed the plug on the lower Left side of box ,to prepare to flush and refill. But nothing came out, I know this may not be unusual if previous owner(s) didnt perform good maint., But am I correct in assuming this is a DRAIN plug or something else? Also is 85/140 ok to use since I have plenty leftover? Thanks very much for any info and comments. Robert in La.

I hope you are doing prevetative maintenance and not checking into why the steering is binding. Those gear boxes on the vertical pedistal are notorious for leaking since it is a vertical shaft and the shaft and seals are decades old. My top box was ground up and had to be rebuilt. There is a similar post up further that address the same issue. I filled both my 420 boxes (which I paid good money for to be empty, I guess)with corn head grease. They have been happy ever since.

O k upon closer inspection I'm seeing that the plug I was calling a drain is probably a fill plug . This plug is located on bottom section slightly below bottom of radiator . Neither the gear box nor this bottom sector have drains and now I'm assuming that their actually separate and each have their own fill plugs. So I guess I'm wondering how to get the old lube (if any ) out ?
