4430 problem--fuel system?

The 4430 I bought in the beginning of the month started acting strange today. When pulling the disk under load, it will run okay for a few minutes, then acts like it's running out of fuel (but it's got a full tank), losing rpm. If I hit the clutch, pull the throttle back, and rev back up, it straightens out for another five minutes or so. I checked the glass bowl and screen, no crud in there. The diesel fuel came out of a filtered tank, and it was purchased less than a month ago. Tractor ran fine on it the past three weeks. The manual I was supposed to get with the tractor from the dealer is backordered from Deere. I am not yet familiar with the Bosch injector pump. . . . could I have a problem there that I'm not seeing? Thanks for any help.

IF ALL FILTERS HAVE BEEN CHANGED AND SCREEN IN TRANSFER PUMP CLEANED,AND THIS DID NOT SOLVE PROBLEM, DON'T ASSUME THAT TANK SUPPLY IS O.K.
DRAIN FUEL TANK AND REMOVE SHUT OFF VALVE AND CLEAN TO BE CERTAIN THAT IT IS NOT STOPPED UP. MOST MECHANICS ASSUME THAT THIS IS O.K. BUT IF YOU DO NOT CHECK AND CLEAN IT YOU CANNOT BE FOR SURE. BE SURE TO CLEAN ELBOW FITTING AT TRANSFER PUMP ALSO.

Bought my 4430 used in 1980- Have over 10000 hours on it, first engine- sounds like yours is starved for fuel- first thing to check is replace fuel filters. Same scenario on powershift tranny if you have problems- change the tranny oil filters. Mine still runs one pint-one quart engine oil per 100 hr oil change. It's a keeper! 4240 and 4450, each over 8000 hrs, first engine, same story.

One other thing, take the fuel line loose at the lift pump and see if there is good flow from the tank. I have seen a few tractors that had grass/corn stalk float around in the tank and once in a while the piece would float over the outlet of the tank and restricts the flow of fuel. With a full tank there should be a stream 2-3 inches out of the line, and with a restriction fuel just trickles out of the line.

If you can't find the problem easily get the help of a good mechanic... If you are not sure what the problem is you are better off to pay someone who knows what they are doing to find the problem than to start guessing and buying lots of unneeded parts. switching parts to see what is the problem is, is too time consuming and wastes way too much money to do...

My first step would be to change the fuel filter, regardless of the condition of the fuel that's been going into the tractor. I've seen a dirty filter cost a 200 horse tractor 45 horsepower on the dyno. Also check the condition of the air filters. Assuming both of those check out fine, my next step would be to check the transfer pump. If you can rig some type of gauge to plumb into the filter bleed screw hole, you can check your fuel supply pressure and make sure it is staying up. You should normally have 20-25 psi of fuel pressure. Another item to check is for a restriction in the fuel return circuit. If the excess fuel can't get away from the nozzles, the engine won't run properly. I would also check and tighten all fuel line connections between the pump and tank, to verify that the system isn't sucking air somewhere. You might also want to check the adjustment of the shut-off cable, as if it is set to tight, the governor won't function correctly. Another item could possibly be the aneiroid line. If all of the above check out, I would inspect an internal problem in the injection pump itself. An individual nozzle malfunction could cause a rough-running condition, but it shouldn't be able to affect the performance of the entire engine and the other cylinders.

Tim, It a pretty good chance you need to change your fuel filters at the rear RH side of the engine. this is a must do first before you go thinking of somthing more major. The filters on it are probably a glass filter, from exspeience I would put the metal filters on, they are more duable and a better filter. Just ask for 2 fuel filters for a 4555 John Deere, they will fit right up. Let me know how things turn out.

First thing to do is check fuel flow from tank to sed bowl on inj pump. next check from there to fuel filters , then from fuel filter to injector pump ive had hose from fuel filters to pump "rubber one" swell up inside and cut down on flow, hope this helps. Just start at the tank and work your way to the pump.
