Everything that I have read tells me that the syncro trans on a 4020 has 2 reverses, but I know that mine has 3. I just bought the tractor 2 years ago, so was a different transmission installed or has it been altered.

From what I have learned the 3rd reverse was on the 3010 and 4010 tractors and eleminated because of safety reasons on the 20 series. I changed out the shifter drums on my 64 model 3020 with those from a 3010 and found this out as I now have the 3rd reverse on it. I have also found as has been said allready that reverse is available in all ranges on the shifter but is blocked out because its just too fast and has a tendency for breaking something but I can't remember what now?

We have a 1964 4020 and it used to have a shifter that would allow the third reverse to be accessed. My Dad used the tractor with a mounted cotton picker when it was new. The tractor had to run backwards with these and the third reverse was for transport. The shifter parts had to be renewed and it was done with two reverse shifter since the tractor mounted pickers have long been replaced.

I have seen normal wear in the shift tower allow that mystery shift into reverse in the 4-7 range. The transmission doesn't know any difference, just what the shifter will allow. There is probably a 4th reverse below 8th gear, just no way to access it.

a faster third reverse gear or a slower reverse gear? I am going to take a good look at my 3020.

Somehow I just figured that would be the way it would go. Thanks for confirming my thought!

The 10 series had the 3rd reverse but for safety the shifting parts were made to only have the 2 reverses in the 20 series. So either your mechanism was altered or one from a 10 series installed.

From What I have heard, the third reverse gear is in all the 4020s and 3020 transmissions. Your shifter must have an extra slot cut in it(not done by the factory) where the 4th and 7th gear range is that lets you access the third reverse gear.

Reversed,Your 4020s shift gate probably won't look altered. Most early 4020s (before the console hydraulic models) allowed the lever to pass the stop for 7th then go into reverse. Not a wide gate like in 5th & 3rd. 8th is the same as 7th. The tin of the dash acts as a stop, so 8th reverse can't be accessed If someone would want a very fast reverse the slot could be cut out to allow the lever to go south to the reverse position.
