What are the pro & con of 720 gas vs 730 diesel? I know both are good tractors. I have a 720 gas, but thinking of trading it for a 730 diesel. I would like some input. Thank ya'll.

Hi, What year is your 720, or serial #? Is there something the 730 has that you want that your 720 doesn't? Is it electric start or pony motor? What is the coldest temperature that you are going to be using the tractor? How many hour would you be putting on per year? Have you seen the 730 running and drove it? I have two 730 diesels and a 720 gas and can give you my experiences.

The 730 I looking at has a electric starter. Will do bushhoging & hay work. Will be pulling a New Idea discbine. I have a hill side farm.

Get one with a WFE! The diesel will save you money if you use it often enough, and I imagine that haying and brush cutting won't involve much cold weather. You'll like the improved creature comforts of the 730 also. Quieter muffler, nice fenders with handholds, and nicer styling are also pluses.

Check the condition of the engine, however. If it turns out to need an overhaul anytime in the foreseeable future it will cost $$$. I have a 730D, rowcrop, and that is what I use it for as well.

Diesel advantages include phenomenal fuel economy, superior lugging, and higher resale. They COST more to buy. Gas versions start easier in cold weather, have fewer problems with the starter (24v diesels need for the electrical system to be in perfect condition), don't HAVE a pony motor at all (100% decrease in problems with that), and have lesser lugging ability. Gas tractors MAY be a bit easier to overhaul. You can work on a gas tractor's carburetor yourself. I do NOT recommend trying to service a diesel's fuel injectors or pump.

The hydraulics, transmission, pto, power steering, clutch, and three point are the same, whether it's a diesel, LP, or a gas.

How will you be using this tractor?

In my mind there is no comparison between the two. AS far as power goes the 730 will walk on the 720. But as far as fixing goes. The 730D is a very sought after tractor, and with that goes very high priced parts.

Hi Brad , I thought I would jump over on the John Deere board , and see what's going on. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have books on John Deere. I read that the only difference between the 720 and 730 was the styling. Engine , tranny , etc. was suposed to be the same. What makes the 730 walk all over the 720?

He was asking about the difference between a 720 GAS and a 730 Diesel. I just feel that the advantages of power in the field are better for the 730. Have had both and liked the 730 better. But if you had a 720 D and a 730 D you would find a difference. But like I said a 720 Gas is cheeper to fix. Most things are easier to find and cheeper and you can do mist work your self easily.

In this case it is the difference in the engine. GAS vs. DIESEL. I've driven both 720s and 730s but they were on LP. The power of the two models with LP engines was about equal.

That's my understanding also the late 20 series and the 30 series mechanically were the same
