On my 48 A, there's a steering shaft packing nut on the rear side of the pedestal (just in front of the radiator fill neck). How do you get to that darn thing to tighten it once you slide the steering shaft back in? You can't move the hood out of the way cause you'd have to take out the steering shaft first. It doesn't seem logical that you'd have to tighten the nut first and then cram the steering shaft through it.

Yours must have been a really good question since there have been no answers. I recently had my H apart in that area. As the worm gear housing was filled with what appeared to be axle bearing grease, I didn't bother with even checking the adjustment of the packing nut. It had not been leaking. The sterering shaft slid out easily and slid back in just as easily without scuffing the new paint. So far, I don't see signs of leaks but then it's been cool weather, not been long since I put it back together - and probably most important - I can't see it!
