I was just reading the front page article about winterizing your tractor and I came across something that caught my attention. In the article it mentioned something about not using detergent oils in old tractors. Is this true? I've been putting detergent oils in my JD 50 for years. Am I hurting the engine by putting detergent oil in it? Hope not. Thanks for any information.

I keep reading over and over that detergent oil will clog the engine. However, detergent oil is designed to suspend the particles in the oil, in other words it does not redeposit them somewhere else. I have never had a problem with an old enging by using modern detergent oil in it. You do have to change the oil more often at first.

Speaking from experience. The first tractor I restored was an Alice Chalmers C. The engine was stuck when I got it home. I got it unstuck changed oil and put detergent oil in it. I drove it about 2 blocks and the oil pump and or lines cloged and it caused the engine to stick. I had to replace the engine. Now I use non D. until I get one overhauled then I change to detergent. Just my two cents worth. Good luck Johnny

Shell Rotella works well to flush engine dirt out. The Mobil 1 synthetic still looked fairly clean but after pulling the oil pan to change a rear seal. We did a change to the cheaper Shell mineral oil just to flush the dirt out. After 10 miles the oil drained out was black!!!

I would continue to treat that ole girl with modern oil. I don't even subscribe to that ole theory of clogging the oil passages. My day may be coming, but after a century and a decade it better be quick. I have always switched old engines to detergent and changed more often while the goop is being cleaned up. Enjoy!

tye,

If your engine is fairly new or rebuilt you will be fine, then you shuold use detergent oils. What can happen to older engines with alot of hours on them if they havent had detergent oil in them is the carbon and sludge in the crankcase can come dislodged and plug an oil pasage. If you use a good detergent oil from the beginning then the oil filter will handle the particles as they form, but using it after many years and hours can be too much for your filter to handle all at once.

The sludge is there if you don't use detergent oil. It's eating at your engine just like cholesterol eating at you.

To finish the analogy, put a "detergent" agent in clogged arteries and you've got a stroke.
