Allan, if the crankshaft end play is reasonable [under .125", though it should be .005" to .010"] the likely cause of the clutch popping out is the toggles not going completely over center & snapping completely in.
~I'll bet the clutch feels kind of notch & you aren't getting a good sound snap when engaging it.
~Try lowering the adjustment nut tension a little & make sure the nuts are at the same tension. If that doesn't do the trick you are going to have to pull the clutch apart & look for worn parts.
~Look for sleeve to drive pin wear [the pin & the hole in the sleeve wears allowing the sleeve to rotate & not allow the toggles to go directly over center].. look for wear on the toggles, pivots, pivot pins, pivot pin boss holes & worn toggle holes in the sleeve. You might find one or two parts with excessive wear or a little wear on all the parts. It is very difficult to tell where to draw the line on worn clutch parts & replacing everything is VERY expensive. ~If you have recently had the clutch apart [& it worked before] you probably didn't get all the worn parts back with their original partner. Mis-matched worn parts are a sure road to a non-functional clutch.....

I am having the opposite problem with my 630 JD. I am having trouble getting the hand clutch to snap into place. It will engage and start the tractor moving fine but I really have to push forward really really hard in order for the clutch to snap into place and stay there. Once engaged and snapped into place it stays fine. What is causing the hand clutch to be so hard to snap into place?

Allan, is it slipping out of gear or is the clutch releasing [snapping out]? It makes a difference on the troubleshooting sequence..

The clutch is releasing when you are moveing along
in gear the hand clutch will move back on its own disengageing.
