I'm having trouble removing the starter from my '49 AW. I've removed the flywheel cover, the 3 starter bolts behind the flywheel, and the cover underneath. That sucker won't budge. Have I missed a fastener or could it be just rusted in?

GWH is right on. Those starter when loose can fall like an anvil. Be sure to get under it and work out the starter. As a matter of fact they are a little dangerous to mess with as most people do not realize the weight factor.

It sure was heavy, didn't get me though. I got it out and it was seized up solid. I tapped on it, talked to it, and sprayed it until it came apart.
I cleaned it all up inside and out and replaced the brushes and springs and believe it or not she's whirrin' again!!! What a relief I didn't want to have to spring for another one (the shipping alone would have broke me as it does weigh as much as the engine in many sub-compact. cars)

Remove the battery cable and the rod that goes to the foot pedal

Dutch, If you don't understand the word heavy you will when that starter comes out, i would put back in 1 bolt a couple threads leaving it loose before prying or tapping. gwh

Dutch, Chances are its rusted fast to the casting. I had the same problem on a D. If you soak the area with PB Blaster and tap the rear of the starter left/right it should break free.

I had PB Blasted it before my first post and when I went back to try again I jerked it right out. Thanks for your help.
